Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary Lens Review

Measuring 2.9 inches in length and weighing just 13.1 oz, the Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN is impressively light and small. Like its I Series siblings, the lens features a premium all-metal body with a manual aperture ring, focus ring and switch, and metal hood.

Internally, the 20mm F2 also uses metal parts, and features a sophisticated optical construction: 13 elements in 11 groups, with 1 FLD, 1 SLD, and 3 aspherical lens elements. Like the 24mm F2, 35mm F2, and 65mm F2, the new lens uses a magnetic lens cap, and shares a 55mm filter thread diameter with the 45mm F2.8 and the 90mm F2.

Performance

On a brisk January afternoon, we paired the lens with a Sony a7 III and hit the streets. At 20mm, the new release is the widest I Series lens to date; and a great option for landscape, architecture, and street photography.

Sigma reports that the new lens delivers a comparable optical performance to their F1.4 Art lenses, such as the popular Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN. This was consistent with our use of the lens.  Ultra-wide lenses can sometimes suffer from distortion, but that simply wasn’t an issue with the 20mm F2. Overall, the image quality output of the lens was fantastic.

The 20mm F2 was also very comfortable to use. In addition to its small and light build, we really appreciated the convenience of the manual aperture ring; especially as we were frequently shooting in and out of the light. Meanwhile, a cover ring between the aperture and focus rings made it easier to attach/detach the lens.

The autofocus performance of 20mm F2 was consistent with Sigma’s other I Series lenses: it was fast and accurate. We tested the autofocus while shooting outside on the street and in our studio, and it was reliable during both shoots.

Price

The Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary lens is available to pre-order now for $699, in Sony E-mount and L-mount. This is a great price considering the portability and high-performance capabilities of the lens. For comparison, the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G is currently priced $898.

The Verdict

The Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN is a great option for photographers and videographers seeking a reliable and portable wide-angle prime lens. The advanced optical construction of the lens, combined with its small and lightweight build, make it a fantastic addition to any camera bag.
