7 Famous Photographers and Their Cameras of Choice

Great photographers don’t need a lot of expensive equipment to be exceptional. That said, it doesn’t hurt. Below find our roundup of 7 famous photographers and their cameras of choice.

1. Annie Leibovitz

Known Cameras: too many to list including the Canon 5D Mark II, Hasselblad with a Phase One back, Nikon D810, and Minolta SRT-101

No list of famous photographers would be complete without Annie Leibovitz. She was the first woman to be named chief photographer of Rolling Stone and went on to work for both Vogue and Elle. Using her distinctive, fanciful style of portrait photography, she’s captured both the personage and personalities of Queen Elizabeth II, Liberace, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Johnny Cash, and countless others.

2. Gordon Parks

Known Cameras: Voigtlander Brilliant and Nikon F2

Gordon Parks was a renaissance man who worked as a photographer, musician, writer, and film director in Civil Rights era America. While Parks made a name for himself as one of the first well-known black filmmakers, he is perhaps best known for his photos of poor Americans taken for Life Magazine. You can read more about his life here.

3. Diane Arbus

Known Cameras: 35mm Nikon, a twin-lens reflex Rolleiflex, and a twin-lens reflex Mamiya

Diane Arbus is known for photographing the marginalized pockets of subculture in New York City. While her career was notoriously cut short by suicide, the brief time Arbus spent behind a camera was focused on the portrayal of castoffs from mainstream society. She used her art to humanize her subjects rather than objectify them; the result is art with penetrating honesty that still resonates today.

4. Dorothea Lange

Known Cameras: Graflex Series DSLR

Dorthea Lange gained artistic acclaim under unlikely circumstances: working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Over the course of her career, Lange photographed the devastating effects of the Great Depression, the lives of sharecroppers and migrant workers, and, eventually, Japanese American internment camps. To this day, her work remains emblematic of a particularly tumultuous era in American politics.

5. Sebastião Salgado

Known Cameras: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III

This Brazilian photojournalist began his work as an economist and transitioned to photography in 1973. Since then, he has traveled to over 120 countries documenting harsh living and working conditions. He’s been internationally recognized with a multitude of awards and grants; most notably, he was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2001.

6. Alfred Eisenstaedt

Known Cameras: Leica III

German-born American photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt is best known for his work as a staff photographer with Life Magazine. His work is a testament to the idea that great photographers don’t need an excessive amount of sophisticated equipment to be great. Eisenstaedt’s iconic candid portraits were captured with a 35mm Leica camera, usually with natural lighting.

7. Mihaela Noroc

Known Cameras: Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 5D Mark III

Rounding off our list of famous photographers is Mihaela Noroc. Noroc is a Romanian photographer who spent the last six years traveling to over 50 countries and collecting content for her now published book The Atlas of Beauty. The photo book contains 500 portraits of women meant to capture the “beauty” of each individual and a glimpse of their struggles and dreams.

That concludes our list of famous photographers and their favorite equipment. If you have any other favorites be sure to leave them in the comments below!

Pixel And Sensor Size

We’ve been slogging along with only 12 MP for so long. The THETA Z1 finally delivers 20 MP and two (relatively) sizable 1.0-inch type sensors. As a result of this overhaul, the Z1 delivers better details, dynamic range, and highlights. We can now prioritize quality over quantity and shoot beautiful RAW footage and 7K still images.

THETA Z1 ISO:200 Shutter speed:1/8 F value:2.1 – Spherical Image – RICOH THETA

User Interface

For years, THETA devices have relied on several strategically placed blinking lights to convey device status and mode. We are very pleased to see that the THETA Z1 has a proper screen. The old way was effective. However, it’s so much easier having the ability to get a live reading of your Z1 without the help of an additional smartphone app.

Remaining Crowd Pleasers

As mentioned above, Ricoh is constantly refining this line. A positive outcome of that development is that they already delivered a ton of useful features prior to the THETA Z1. That said, we’re most excited to see increased image stabilization, bracketing, and the 4-channel “360º” microphone back on the spec sheet.

6 Drone Photography Tips For Aspiring Pros

Drone Photography Tips 2

Happy Earth Day, everyone! In honor of this big blue marble we call home, we put together a guide of the top 6 drone photography tips required to take perfect aerial photos.

Aerial photography is intimidating to even the most experienced photographers. However, if you keep these tips in mind and remember that photography basics still apply, you won’t have any issues capturing great content with your drone.

1. Exposure Bracketing and HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Taking advantage of exposure bracketing ensures that your shot is perfectly exposed every time. At its most basic level, exposure bracketing is the practice of taking the same shot at 3-5 different exposures (high, average, and low). During the editing process, you combine these photos (preferably captured RAW) to create one perfect, highly-detailed, HDR image.

HDR, or “High Dynamic Range” images are captured with the specific intent of recording details that would otherwise be washed out in very light or very shadowy images. This video does a great job explaining how to create HDR images in Photoshop. We recommend checking it out if you’re new to these concepts and/or are more of a visual learner.

As mentioned above, when possible you should shoot RAW image files instead of JPEGs. We can’t stress this enough for two reasons. First, RAW images aren’t compressed and hold more visual information. Having all of that info gives you more options during the editing process. For example, it makes effective exposure bracketing possible.

Second, when you’re shooting with a drone, you aren’t working with a huge sensor. For example, even the DJI Mavic 2, one of the best consumer drones on the market, has a sensor size of only 1”. So, utilizing a larger image size is a must.

Yes, we know RAW files are absurdly large and harder to store. To that we say, look into upgrading your backup drive.

Drone Photography Tips AEB

3. Fast Shutter Speeds

Taking a steady photograph isn’t always possible without the help of a tripod. Now imagine floating 300 feet in the air being blown around by high-speed winds and trying to get a long exposure shot—it’s not going to happen.

The reason we put so much emphasis on practices like exposure bracketing is that traditional long-exposure shots are next to impossible in drone photography; there is simply too much movement. To get around unsalvageable, blurry images be sure to stick with faster shutter speeds to get the best results.

Drone Photography Tips

4. Shadows Are Your Friend

Shadows not only lend an interesting visual element to aerial photography but also provide additional perspective. For example, if you’re shooting directly above an object it won’t always be entirely clear what you’re looking at (for example, a bin on a beach). Shadows provide insight into both the size and identity of otherwise obscure items. This brings us to perhaps the most obvious tip on our list: shoot during magic hour.

That magic time in the afternoon provides an increased sense of drama, cranks up vibrancy, and gives you the kind of long shadows that we’re talking about. This is also applicable to a sunrise but who wants to wake up for that?

Drone Photography Tips 3

5. Cheat Your Sensor

As with all things in life, there is a hack for getting a higher-resolution photo with a sensor that offers a low megapixel count. We aren’t talking about upgrading your drone (although that probably wouldn’t hurt). Instead, use the panorama technique.

Building your own panorama is a great way to create high-resolution images and capture a wide range of details that can’t be achieved in a single shot. First, periodically take photos while panning over the scene you want to capture. Then, head to your computer and stitch them together into one complete image. Ta-da! An absurdly easy way to create a high-resolution photo.

Some of the newer drones have built-in Panorama Mode (lucky you). For the rest of us, there is Adobe Lightroom.

Sensor Sizes

6. Have A Plan

Congratulations! You have a beautiful new drone and a totally different perspective than all of the other photographers stuck on the ground. However, that comes with a specific set of challenges. First, drones have a much shorter battery life than handheld cameras. This means less shooting time and much less room for test shots and trial-and-error. Second, the weather is now a pressing factor—your drone is not friends with rain or lightning. Finally, there are location-specific drone laws that keep people from abusing their newfound power of flight (fair enough).

Whether you plan to take a drone with you on vacation to an exotic island or put it up in your backyard, you need to do your research and have a general plan. Can you shoot drone photography there without being chased down by the police? What are your must-have shots? How many can you realistically fit in before your drone runs out of power? Take note of these things before you start shooting.

The Case For Post-Mortem Photography

The Case For Post-Mortem Photography feature 1

Post-mortem photography makes people very uncomfortable. I learned this the hard way when I started researching this piece and brought the concept up to my friends. They were (let’s say) less than receptive to the idea of a professional funeral photographer. In fact, the thought of this specialty elicited a wide range of reactions from horror and disgust to fear.

Their aversion makes sense to me… to a point.

Much of the world is (rightfully) taught to respect the dead and treat funerals and burials with the quiet reverie often reserved for places of worship. Coming into that space with a noisy camera to capture emotional mourners, funeral proceedings, and posthumous portraits is in sharp contrast with our societal muscle memory.

An off-put friend of mine summed up the sentiment best: it’s a funeral, not prom. Who is doing this kind of photography? Why are they doing it? To get answers we reached to photographer Melanie Parker who is making a name for herself shooting post-mortem photography.

The First Funeral

Before we got on the phone I had some very specific assumptions about what a funeral photographer would be like. I imagined a Utah-based second cousin of Wednesday Addams who also owns an apothecary on the side. Perhaps hellhounds howling in the background of the call, their unearthly yowls echoing through an in-home dungeon. You know—totally normal, rational assumptions.

Spoiler alert: Melanie is in no way a morbid person. If anything, she’s a kind, well-meaning pragmatist. She began her career as a funeral photographer under incredibly unfortunate circumstances when her 19-month-old nephew passed away.

“[His] was the first funeral I did,” Melanie explained. “I had the idea, and then my sister ended up asking me if I would do it as well. We both had this mutual want to take pictures for her, just because [the death] was very unexpected. We saw it as our last goodbye.”

This wasn’t only the first funeral that Melanie shot, but also her family’s first encounter with post-mortem photography. For all of the social reasons mentioned above, her presence that day was initially received with hostility.

“The family was really upset with me as I’m taking pictures of these personal moments. I could feel the hatred, that I was somehow imposing on their special, heartbreaking moment. Because you hear the camera clicking, and I’m taking pictures of people crying. It was almost like I was some annoying paparazzi or something. I could tell that they were really upset with me, but I just did it.”

A Brief History of Post-Mortem Photography

I’d be more inclined to agree with post-mortem photography naysayers if it wasn’t for the artform’s incredible amount of historical precedent.

This practice was one of the most common uses for photography from the mid-19th through the early-20th centuries. In fact, there was a point where post-mortem photography outpaced wedding photography at a rate of 3:1. That’s right—for every one picture of two terrified newlyweds looking into a camera, there were three photos taken of a dead person.

Harlem book of the dead post-mortem photography james van der zee

These photographs were a less expensive alternative to deathbed and mourning portraits which became popular after the Protestant Reformation. Back then they were also, for lack of a better word… creepier. People were arranged, doll-like, in real-life situations, portraying them as they were in life. In many cases, family portraits were taken to include a deceased child or parent to capture the family together before the body was interred.

This was not a private, shameful practice. Instead, these images were displayed proudly on mantles and in other prominent places in the home; they were a family heirloom like any other.

Post-mortem photography was popular in the United States and parts of Europe until around the 1930s when people began traveling to hospitals to die rather than remaining in their homes. At that time, even the most celebrated artists—including one of New York City’s most lauded photographers, James Van Der Zee—bolstered their names with this kind of photography. So much so, in fact, that James later published a book called The Harlem Book of The Dead that highlights his work from that period.

All of this is to say Melanie is in good company.

Navigating A Taboo

Everyone mourns differently. So, wouldn’t it make sense that some of us require a visual crutch to help us process a loss? Something to physically hold onto when the person we love is truly gone. What of parents, like Melanie’s sister, who lose children so young they don’t have many visual representations of their short life together? It’s a brutal reality, but a reality nonetheless.

“I remember my sister contacting me months later. She told me that she went back to look at the pictures multiple times just to remind herself that it was real, that it happened.” Similarly, the family members who were incensed about Melanie’s role at the funeral reached back out with a very different message when they finally saw the photos.

“I’ve had people tell me that the pictures have been helpful to be able to look back and see that other people were suffering with them—they weren’t by themselves in their pain and their grief. They could see in these pictures that multiple people were heartbroken, and it wasn’t just them going through this.”

After witnessing the positive, cathartic effects of her work, Melanie contacted the four funeral homes around her neighborhood in Pleasant View, Utah to see if they’d be interested in giving her name to prospective clients.

Only one said yes to her offer even after she specified that her funeral photography services are free (she makes a living charging for weddings, portraits, and other mainstream services). The other three refused to discuss the idea with her because they thought she was being insensitive; in her words, they were appalled and upset at the idea.

“It’s a very challenging market, not to make money, but to convince people to go for it, to ask for [this service]. It’s been a process.”

The Future of Post-Mortem Photography

This is not to say that Melanie hasn’t seen any interest. In fact, quite a few people across the United States have asked her to cross the country and do a shoot for their deceased loved one. Unfortunately, she can only shoot funerals locally because she doesn’t charge for this specific service—the result would be a 100% financial loss on her part.

However, those accepting, open-minded people scattered across the nation give her (and me for that matter) hope that this taboo will grow again into something that helps people cope with loss.

“If you think of a wedding,” Melanie explained, “you make it a point to show all the joy and the happiness. But when I do a funeral, I really strive to show all the pain, just because you have to feel it to move on, to heal…It’s like if you have a cut you put Neosporin on it, and it hurts, and you have to clean it to really make it heal. That’s kind of how I see it.”

Key Differences

At first glance, the Canon SL3 and SL2 look very similar because, well, they are. However, there are a couple of key features worth noting including video quality and image processing.

Video

The SL3 is the first Rebel camera that touts 4k video (the SL2 only shoots 1080p). This is an important upgrade that keeps the Rebel series in competition with other entry-level DSLRs.

Image Processor

The SL3 comes with an updated image processor; the SL2 uses the DIGIC 7 and the SL3 has the DIGIC 8. That change facilitates faster and more accurate dual pixel CMOS AF and Eye Detection AF.

Feature Highlights

The features listed below aren’t new to the SL3. However, they’re important highlights of the SL2 and SL3’s overall usability.

Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus

If you’re researching Canon cameras, you’ve undoubtedly seen “Dual Pixel Autofocus” listed as a key feature. It’s one of those phrases you see and think, “I don’t know exactly what that is…but it sounds important and I want it.”

That is both a safe and correct assumption.

Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus is a Canon-exclusive, focus-tracking feature. More specifically, it improves shooting in Live View and is designed to provide smoother, sharper focus tracking when you or your subject is moving.

So, how does it work? Basically, each pixel on the sensor has two dedicated photodiodes (the element that converts light to an electrical current); normally, a pixel only has one photodiode.

When you record something with your Canon camera, those dual photodiodes work independently and send separate signals with different information about the shot’s focus. Finally, those two separate signals are combined to form one video or photo with a hyper-accurate, consistent focus.

An apt comparison would be calling in two doctors to get the best possible diagnosis rather than relying on one.

180° Tilting LCD Screen

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 has a 3.0″ vari-angle LCD screen that turns to facilitate easy selfies. It’s also touch-sensitive so you can focus and zoom or swipe through images after you’ve taken them.

Rebel SL3 Sample

Video Stabilization

The SL3 has built-in, 5-axis video stabilization. Sadly, this feature doesn’t extend to still photography just yet. However, when recording video, it helps you capture smooth footage while you’re on the go.

Do you think it’s worth the upgrade from the Canon EOS Rebel SL2 to the Rebel SL3? Let us know in the comments below.

Major Updates

Overall Quality

The Lumix G95 might be a little heavier than comparable models in its class but it makes up for it with a larger sensor and 20.3 megapixel resolution (compared to its predecessor’s 16 megapixels). Those crisp, in-camera images are displayed on an upgraded 1.24m dot fully articulating screen.

Video

All signs point to Panasonic wanting the G95 to be your favorite new vlogging camera.

Like the G85, the Lumix G95 has the ability to capture 4K video at 30p and 24p at 100Mbps. Unlike the G85, however, the G95 can capture Full HD footage at up to 120 fps using its new high-speed video mode.

One particularly exciting video upgrade is the addition of V-Log L. This feature offers users a wider dynamic range of color grading for post-production processing. That said, it’s only 8-bit which does equate to some limitations.

It’s also worth noting that the G95’s wide-angle video capabilities take a hit. The camera has a substantial 1.25x crop which will limit your range of view.

LUMIX G 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens

New Kit Lens

Let’s talk about the versatile new LUMIX G 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens. It’s equivalent to a 28-280mm on a Micro Four Thirds body and is splash and dust resistant. The new lens system features three aspherical lenses, two extra-low dispersion lenses, and 10x optical zoom.

One of the most remarkable things about this item is that it packs all of that power into a relatively compact package at 2.95” long weighing only 9.4 oz.
