Profoto B10 Plus

Profoto B10 Plus Product

The B10 Plus’s predecessor, the Profoto B10, is an industry favorite for a reason. Released in 2018, the B10 quickly made a name for itself as one of the smallest, most effective lightweight off-camera flashes available in this price range. Now, the new B10 Plus is a natural extension of the product line.

Power

The B10 Plus takes all of the convenience of the original and adds more power. In fact, its ten times more powerful than a speedlight in a package that’s similar in size and weight to a long camera lens.

Profoto B10 Plus Product

Customization

Another important factor of this new model is its versatility. Its integrated continuous light has a wide range of outputs from bright to gentle which is great for shooting both stills and video. Plus, the adjustable color temperature makes it easy to blend light from the B10 with ambient light.

You also have light shaping tools at your disposal—the B10 Plus integrates with any tool from the lightweight OCF family and over 120 light shaping tools available from the full Profoto range.

Profoto B10 Plus Product

Appearance + Interface

The B10 Plus looks very similar to the original and is on brand with the other Profoto products; it’s lightweight, cordless and has a clean, minimal interface.

The battery is quick and easy to switch in and out and you can also charge it while it’s in use. Additionally, the stand adaptor is removable so the light can be mounted on both camera tripods and light stands.

Connectivity

You can trigger and control the B10 Plus from any Profoto Air Remote or from the Profoto A1/A1X. However, the Profoto app lets you view and control all the settings from your smartphone screen and download product upgrades.

What’s The Deal With The Panasonic Filmmaker Upgrade?

Panasonic Filmmaker Upgrade

Today, Panasonic announced four new products: the S-Series 1.4X Teleconverter, S-Series 2X Teleconverter, a 10-25MM F/1.7 G-Series lens, and the S1 Filmmaker Upgrade. All of these items are now available for preorder and shipping in July. In this post, we dive into the specifics of the Panasonic S1 Filmmaker upgrade.

The Panasonic LUMIX S1 Filmmaker Upgrade

Up until today, the Panasonic S1 has been a great option for photography. It features a full-frame 24.2MP CMOS sensor and a Venus Engine image processor. However, it was not necessarily top-of-mind for professional videographers.

Right now, the S1 can shoot 4K at 60fps. But, when you shoot in those parameters the bitrate is reduced to 8-bit; your sensor is cropped down to APS-C and there’s a dip in quality. The introduction of the Filmmaker Upgrade changes all of that. Adding this firmware to your S1 essentially gives you a brand new video camera.

The most notable additions are:

  • 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI live output.
  • 4K 30p/24p 4:2:2 10-bit in-camera recording.
  • V-LOG and V-GAMMUT enable Panasonic original V-Log color profile V-Log + V-Gammut from Varicam cinema cameras (this is about 15 stops of dynamic range).
  • LUT SUPPORT which enables wave-form monitor and support to view an included LUT. It also gives you the ability to load custom LUTs.

How much does it cost?

The firmware update is free with every purchase of a LUMIX S1. If you already have the S1, you can still upgrade for free; just contact the authorized retailer where you bought the camera and provide proof of purchase. Then, they’ll send over the code you need along with installation instructions.

Can download this to my S1R?

No, we are afraid not. This update is currently only available for the Panasonic S1.

Will the Panasonic S1 Filmmaker Upgrade make this camera more attractive to videographers? Let us know in the comments!

Over Coffee: Mindy Tucker, Comedy Photographer & Anthropologist

In this, the era of social media celebrity, professional photography equipment is more accessible than ever. Some smartphone cameras are even starting to outpace point-and-shoots.

The resulting deluge of content has had a myriad of unexpected consequences. Some are positive, others less so. One such consequence is that today, there are fewer (if any) individual photographers known for capturing the cultural zeitgeist of a specific time and place.

For example, Sid Avery’s name is indelibly linked with the Golden Age of Hollywood—he was The Celebrity Photographer. Similarly, the Harlem Renaissance was captured and shaped through the lens of James Van Der Zee. Today, for better or worse, the ethos of our experiences is often crowdsourced via hashtag.

However, as with anything, there are exceptions. Quietly tucked away in the darkest corner of a comedy club, Mindy Tucker is one of them.

With a mixture of timing, skill, and perseverance Mindy managed to become The Comedy Photographer. This is made more impressive when you consider the fact that comedy is an industry in which turnover, burnout, and compulsory reinvention aren’t just common but expected. She is a stable and consistent presence in a mess of frenetic energy.

We caught up with the photographer in her treehouse-esk studio to talk about her origins, philosophy, and what goes into making a signature “Mindy.”

The Tyranny of 20 Slides

Mindy Tucker began her career sliding down the conveyor belt of traditional education. She obtained her MFA in photography but she found the environment to be too rigid and restrictive.

“I call it the tyranny of 20 slides,” she explained. “I did what I was taught in art school which was to create a body of work. You want to have maybe twenty things that can hang together. Then you go to a gallery and you see if they’re interested…I just banged my head on the wall for several years working in this way of ‘here’s a target, and I’m going to make work that is going to help me hit that target.’”

She still wasn’t satisfied after she hit that target and got her work included in a group show.

“Nothing was natural, nothing fit, and I didn’t know how to proceed. I knew that the way that I had approached things wasn’t working, but I had no idea how to change or what to do.” So, she did what so many of us do when we hit a dead end. She called her best friend.

“We would just talk on the phone all the time about how do we change this? How do we stop this? Over several conversations going on for a couple of months, we made this list of rules. The first rule was I was never going to apply for anything ever again. No more trying to make work for a deadline, for a grant application. No more trying to get a gallery to notice me. Stop it.

Her new philosophy was summed up in a single phrase: go where you’re wanted.

“It just snowballed out of control”

Mindy poured her energy into self-discipline rather than continuing to fight her instincts. She made a website that she could add to and update herself. Rule number two was born once the site went live: Mindy would add at least one photo to the site every week.

“At the time my website had fifteen visits a month. It was probably my mom, you know? But the rule was I just had to shoot something, and I also had to go through the process of editing it and putting it on the website. Just to keep me afloat and thinking as an artist because I had a day job as a secretary at the time.”

Soon after, Mindy’s best friend from high school, Carol Hartsell, started a comedy show at Rififi, a popular, now-closed club in the East Village.

“When [Sarah] asked me if I would come and take pictures, I was like, ‘oh, this is great. It’s convenient, I can see my friend, and I’m also meeting my rule of ‘I’m shooting something. I’ll have to edit it.’ So, just in this place of being lost and trying to figure it out, at least you’re nurturing a friendship, you know?”

“That was how I started doing her show regularly,” she nodded, a smile spreading across her face. “Then it just snowballed out of control.”

Mindy became a staple in New York clubs and went to almost every show she was invited to. She only turned down gigs when the lineup was too similar to one she recently shot—she wanted to make sure she recorded as many comics as she possibly could.

The only thing more impressive than the amount of ground she covered is that she shot all of the shows for free.

She soon made headlines with her One Year photo project, a task she undertook to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Creek & The Cave. At its core, the project is meant to pay homage to the New York City comedy scene’s many venues and comics. And I do mean all of its comics. The final installation is essentially a meticulously assembled yearbook made up of 570 photos.

Today, hundreds of shows and thousands of pictures later, Mindy still shoots events for free and only at venues to which she is specifically invited.

Trust Falls

I was admittedly a little nervous to meet Mindy but I didn’t start out that way. I approached the interview the same way I always do: with a healthy dose of research and note-taking. But I quickly realized that she isn’t just in the comedy community—she is beloved by many of my favorite comics.

When you think of a professional photographer the first adjective to come to mind isn’t necessarily beloved. Talented, yes. Dedicated, sure. High maintenance… sometimes. But beloved? Not so much. And, for the record, comedians aren’t always the easiest crowd to win over.

The trust she’s built and the vulnerability she captures in her photos is a reflection of how she approaches a shoot.

“I’m too shy to be a photographer…I lose more shots than I think anyone just because if I ever feel like someone might be uncomfortable, I don’t take the picture. From what I understand about most other photographers, they would, and I don’t. It makes me feel gross.” She went on to say that her goal is to collaborate with people.

“I’m there as a cheerleader,” she explained. “I’m not there for dirt. I’m not there to embarrass anybody. I’m there because I remember that phase of being an artist that was incredibly difficult, and I’m there to be like, ‘hey, I see you. You might not have gotten this one, but you’ll get the next one. It’s okay.’ There’s a place in the world for other kinds of photography, but it’s not me, and it’s not this situation.”

Her philosophy delivers crowd-favorite results that are affectionately referred to as getting a “Mindy.”

Making A “Mindy”

According to the photographer herself, the first “Mindy” ever taken was of comedian and actor Baron Vaughn; it took years to capture.

“Every time he would do this show, I would try to take a portrait of him. Then the next time he would be on the show, I would be like, ‘well, I didn’t like that [shot], and here’s what I did wrong.’” This was long before she invested in her Canon 5D Mark III—sometimes she had to contend with technical issues. Often, the end result simply wasn’t what she envisioned for the shot. So, she tried again, and again…and again.

“[Baron] sat through…I mean, I don’t even know. I don’t even know [how many shots]. There’s photos from 2007 that we can’t find…”

“The lost years,” I offered.

“Yeah, there are missing things in the archive. So I truly don’t even know how many times he sat through that [portrait].”

This happened over a decade ago but you can still hear the edge of frustration in her voice, the gears turning as she flips through every failed solution she worked through. At that juncture, Mindy was broke (“can’t say enough, broke”), shooting in film, and using a series of makeshift lighting equipment.

Mindy Tucker Baron Vaughn
The first “Mindy” – Baron Vaughn – Shoot the Messenger | Courtesy of Mindy Tucker

“Sometimes I didn’t even have money to get the pictures printed up,” she said. “I could afford to get just the film developed, and then I would try to scan it and just see ‘did it come out at all?’”

Mindy was not only contending with financial restrictions but also the growing pains of developing her style. It’s a struggle that all artists face: you know what the end result should look like, it’s just a matter of transposing it from your brain onto your canvas.

Some artists work through this, many don’t. Luckily for us—and hundreds of comedians—Mindy did. After years of trial and error, Mindy found her light (and switched to digital).

“Finally, sometime in 2007, I got the picture of Baron that I’d been trying to get. It’s him and he’s on the edge of a stage and it’s after a show. Finally, we’ve got off-camera flash and a good exposure, and also it’s in focus.”

“When you took the photo,” I asked, “did you know you had it?”

“I do think I was, like, giddy that finally it had worked and I had figured something out. Yeah. Yeah. Then the next couple weeks I was trying to replicate it with everybody, you know?”

There Can Only Be One

Mindy Tucker found her way to comedy at the right time. She was among supportive friends who needed a little help themselves. When asked what advice she had for up-and-coming photographers she suggested that they keep their eyes open for similar opportunities.

“The thing that turned my whole life around was to stop trying to be a thing that already exists. Stop it. Stop it. If you have some goal up on your wall of a specific artist or a specific career, that career’s already been done.”

“Look around. Who is your friend Carol who is doing a thing, and they need your help? Where is that in your community? Where is that in your friend group? Where is the place where your skills are needed, and you’re also going to be able to grow and change?”

Which Novation Launchpad Should I Buy? (Mini MK3, MK2, Pro)

Novation Launchpad Feature 3

If you’re even remotely familiar with the electronic music scene, you’ve heard of Novation. The company develops a wide array of composing and DJing equipment including Launchkey keyboards, synths, grooveboxes, and (of course) the Novation Launchpad.

Are you looking for a different comparison in the Novation or Focusrite family? If so, we also think you should also check out:

What’s a Launchpad?

People primarily use MIDI devices to arrange and manipulate audio clips in conjunction with audio editing software like Ableton (more on that in a moment). As described in our post about MIDI keyboards, a MIDI controller is a standard piece of hardware often found in the electronic music scene. When “played” it triggers sounds assigned to the device’s individual touchpads by the user.

There are three Novation Launchpads to consider: the Launchpad Mini MK3, Launchpad MK2, and Launchpad Pro. The functionality of all three is almost exactly the same with a few key differences including size, on-board settings, and customization.

All About Ableton

All three Launchpads come with Ableton Live Lite. Ableton is a DAW (digital audio workstation) utilized for track creation, performance, light shows, and spur-of-the-moment improvisation. It’s important to note that these devices come with Ableton Live Lite, which—while lacking some of the functionality provided by paid versions of Ableton Live—does an amazing job. This is especially true if you’re just starting out in electronic music.

Novation Launchpad Mini MK3

Perfect for: people on a budget, DJs on-the-go, those with little-to-no studio space

Technically, there is no “introductory” or “beginner” Launchpad; as mentioned above, the core functionality across all three is nearly identical. However, the Novation Launchpad Mini MK3’s price makes it a bit more accessible to those just starting out.

As its name indicates, the key selling feature of the Mini is its size. It features an 8×8 grid of pads at ⅜ scale and only weighs about .84 lbs (381 grams). It is considerably smaller and thinner than its larger counterparts making it the perfect travel companion. Plus, unlike the MK2, the MK3’s colors are not limited. It’s a great choice for overall functionality and if you’re investing in a Launchpad for light shows.

There’s only one con for new users. The pads aren’t labeled with their functions in an effort to save space on the device. However, if you’re still learning (or just want to reference commands at-a-glance) you can always get label stickers to place on and around the pads.

As for software, the Mini comes with Ableton Live Lite, 4GB of Loopmasters Samples, Novation Bass Station VST, Free Lessons from Melodics.com, and Sound Collective: Regular Free and Discounted Plugins.

All-in-all, this is an inherently convenient device. It’s relatively affordable, you can take it anywhere, and it fits on even the most cluttered studio desk.

Click here to check out our comparison of the Mini MK2 and Mini MK3.

Novation Launchpad MK2

Perfect for: New/mid-level users, light-show enthusiasts

The Novation Launchpad MK2 is the perfect midrange model in this Novation line. It’s the Goldilocks option: not too big, not too small, just right. Like the Mini, it has an 8×8 grid and all of the same function buttons. However, the MK2’s buttons are pre-labeled and its pads are full-sized and capable of a much more extensive range of colors.

This model doesn’t require an external power supply because it’s powered via USB. It also comes with everything you need to start recording immediately including a USB cable, starter guide, 4 GB of sample sounds, a Bass Station VST/AU plug-in synthesizer, and a V Station VST/AU plug-in synthesizer.

Novation Launchpad Pro MK3

Perfect for: performers, professional musicians, those with cash to burn

Like the MK2 and the Mini, the Novation Launchpad Pro has the same 8×8 grid of pads. However, its expanded functionality and user interface upgrades make it an invaluable tool for composing and recording electronic music.

The keyword here is customization. There are additional function buttons surrounding the composition pads which are velocity and pressure-sensitive. As a result, recording with the Pro makes for a more dynamic, responsive recording experience. This is also the only hackable Launchpad.

The Pro’s software includes Live Lite, 4GB of Loopmasters Samples, Novation V-Station VST, Novation Bass Station VST, Free Lessons from Melodics.com, XLN Audio Addictive Keys VST, and Sound Collective: Regular Free and Discounted Plugins.

New Buttons Facilitate Standalone Use

Novation is doing their best to streamline your workflow with their new models. Their new Mini MK3 arrived complete with new custom mode buttons (“Drums”, “Keys”, and “User”). Now, the Launchpad Pro MK3 is getting the same treatment.

There is an entirely new row of 8 buttons at the bottom of the Pro MK3. According to Novation, these new additions can “launch clips and scenes, access mixer, device, and transport controls, and quantise, duplicate and double, all without touching your mouse.”

Scale Mode

Scale Mode is an exclusive feature to Launchpad Pro; this function lets users lock every note of a MIDI phrase from the keyboard or controller to a specific scale or key. For example, if you want to make every key of your keyboard exclusively play on G major scale, you can accomplish that with the help of Scale Mode.

That wraps up our overview of the Novation Launchpad series. Regardless of which model you choose, all of them do an incredible job facilitating track creation, performance, light shows, and spur-of-the-moment improvisation. Do you have a favorite? Let us know in the comments below!

Fujifilm GFX 100 Photos, Specs, Features & Price

Fujifilm has officially announced its latest camera: the new large format Fujifilm GFX 100. This is the follow-up camera to the GFX 50S released back in 2017.

Fujifilm continues to be on the cutting edge of the mirrorless revolution. The company has created some of the most technologically advanced cameras of the 21st century including the Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30 and—of course—the GFX 50S. Now, they’re onto bigger and better things: a digital mirrorless large format camera.

We were lucky enough to get a hands-on look at the new Fujifilm GFX 100. In the grand tradition of Fuji launches, we were invited to a secret shooting location, handed a breathtaking new camera, and told to have a ball. Keep scrolling for features, specs, and exclusive photos.

Why The Fujifilm GFX 100 Is Awesome

Overview

The Fujifilm GFX 100 is the first large format camera of its kind with an impressive 102 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor. That massive sensor combined with an X-Processor 4 enhances image quality by bringing the exposure plane closer to the color filter array. In less nerdy terms, this update inherently reduces images’ noise levels and lowers the native ISO to 160.

Video-Friendly Large Format

This is undoubtedly an amazing camera for still images. However, with this model, Fujifilm also sets users up for an exceptional video recording experience with its image stabilization capabilities, video quality, and tracking.

Image Stabilization

The GFX 100 has 5 stops of image stabilization and a dedicated dual processor that works with gyroscopic accelerometers to achieve sensor stability; this is true even if the camera is fitted with a non-optically stabilized FUJINON lens. As a result, it’s now significantly easier to capture precise, large-format content in low-light conditions or when shooting handheld.

Quality

The Fujifilm GFX 100’s sensor and processor combination supports 4K video recording at 30p/10bits. It provides a cinematic, large format look for creatives interested in better controlling depth of field and achieving a film-like tonality. For all the gearheads out there, it’s also worth noting that this camera can record in F-Log Rec 2020 and capture 10-bit, 4:2:2 uncompressed footage through the HDMI port.

Tracking

The number of autofocus phase detection pixels in the sensor has been increased to 2.16 million which cover the entire frame (approx. 100%)—this enables absurdly fast and accurate auto-focus. Similarly, the low-light threshold for phase detection autofocus was expanded from +0.5EV to -3.0EV.

Price & Pre-order Information

You can check out the full list of specs and pre-order it here for $9,999.95. This is (hilariously) a very reasonable price for a 100MP large format camera, especially one that shoots in 4K. For comparison, the Hasselblad H6D-400c 100MP 4K Medium Format DSLR goes for a whopping $48k.

That concludes our first look at the Fujifilm GFX 100. Is it worth the investment? Let us know in the comments!

The Nikon Z Series Firmware 2.0 Update Is Here

Z Series 2.0 Firmware Update

Today, Nikon announced the Z Series 2.0 Firmware update for the Z6 and Z7. As promised, it delivers the highly anticipated eye detection auto-focus feature. In this post, we review the specifics and give you the links and instructions you need for the update.

Nikon Z Series Firmware 2.0 | Eye-Detection Autofocus

As mentioned above, the most anticipated upgrade this update delivers is to eye detection. The Z6 and 7Z can now track subjects’ eyes when they move within the frame. Similarly, the camera continues to track someone’s face when it is partially or temporarily blocked from view (there is a great demo of this in the video below); the tracking is continuous and incredibly smooth. You can take advantage of this feature when using AF-S (single shot) and AF-C (continuous shooting) modes.

Shooting more than one person? 2.0 allows the Z6 and Z7 to recognize multiple people and gives you the ability to choose which person (or in this case eye) to focus on.

Low-light Performance

Not to be out shadowed (pun intended), this Nikon Z Series Firmware update also enhances low-light performance. As such, it facilitates faster, more accurate focusing whether you’re taking indoor portraits or shooting outside at night. It’s also worth noting that Auto Exposure (AE) now continues to track in every shot throughout the entire burst sequence.

How do I upgrade?

Step 1: Download Firmware 2.0

Step 2: Transfer to an XQD card

Use a card reader to transfer the firmware to your XQD card.

Step 3: Install on your camera

Place the XQD card in your camera, go to SETUP and select Firmware Update.

Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II Digital Camera

Price: $559.00

The Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II is an affordable point-and-shoot camera that offers remarkable quality for its size. That said, this is decidedly a no-frills option that does the basics incredibly well. Thanks to its DIGIC 7 image processor and 20.1MP 1″ CMOS sensor, the G7 X Mark II’s enhanced focus and tracking speeds hold up even in low-light shooting situations.

Leica C-Lux Digital Point-And-Shoot Camera

Price: $1,050.00

The Leica name is associated with both high quality and (understandably) high prices—the Leica C-Lux is no exception. This model has 4K video recording at 30 fps and an impressive maximum ISO sensitivity of 25600 that rivals some of its larger DSLR counterparts. It also doesn’t hurt that its focal length spans from 24 to 360mm (35 mm equivalent), so you get up close and personal while keeping your distance.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VI Digital Camera

Price: $1,198.00

This little camera established itself on our list of the best point-and-shoot cameras with its extra features. The Sony RX100 VI has an incredible 24-200mm f/2.8–f/4.5 ZEISS lens and the world’s fastest hybrid autofocus system. Small F-numbers throughout the zoom range make it easy to achieve fast shutter speeds (24 fps) and lots of gorgeous bokeh. You can find our full video review here.

Panasonic LUMIX ZS200

Price: $697.99

Are you interested in investing in a camera with a Leica lens but don’t want to spend Leica prices? The Panasonic LUMIX ZS200 is a great option. It offers a 15x LEICA DC Vario-Elmar lens that can capture every scene from wide-angle to telephoto (35mm camera equivalent: 24-360mm). If you’re worried about shaky hands at 15x magnification, never fear. To eliminate jerky shooting, the lens features 5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S.+ in photo and video recording.

Ricoh GR Ⅲ Premium Compact Digital Camera

Price: $899.99

Last but not least on our list of the best point-and-shoot cameras is the Ricoh GR III. A brief Google search of the GR III will show you that many consider this a “perfect” point-and-shoot camera. It boasts a 24.23 MP APS-C sensor, a 28mm fixed focal length lens, and 16x magnification that make this camera both responsive and highly versatile. The only (slight) downside is that the Ricoh GR III’s 3” touchscreen is fixed. However, that doesn’t stop this from being a wise investment for new and experienced photographers alike.

That’s our list of the best point-and-shoot cameras of 2019! Comment below with your favorite or any additions you think should be on the list.

Lens Roundup: ZEISS Lenses, Canon Lenses & Laowa Ultra Macro

We’ve been flooded with lens releases this week. Now that things have calmed down, here’s a roundup with all of the specs and features you need for the ZEISS Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZF.2, Canon RF 85mm f/1.2, and Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro APO.

ZEISS Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZF.2

  • Price: $4,990.00 (pre-order)
  • Feature Overview:
    • Available Mounts: Canon EF, Nikon F
    • Focal Length: 100 mm
    • Aperture: f/1.4 – f/16
    • Sensor Format: full frame

Zeiss lenses for Nikon and Canon continue to be a favorite of photographers and videographers alike. This is the fourth installment in the Otus line; the first three are the Otus 55mm f/1.4, Otus 85mm f/1.4, and the Otus 28mm f/1.4.

Zeiss lenses are known for their clarity. That said, the new 100mm features an apochromatic lens that gives it exceptional chromatic and spherical aberration correction. The quality this Carl Zeiss Lens provides is further enhanced with the Zeiss T anti-reflective lens coatings on its 14 lens elements. All in all, it’s a lens we’re excited to test out.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2

  • Price: $2,699.00 (pre-order)
  • Feature Overview:
    • Available Mounts: Canon RF
    • Focal Length: 85mm
    • Aperture: f/1.2
    • Sensor Format: full frame

The keyword here is “bright.” The new Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 sets itself apart by maintaining high image quality from edge to edge even at its maximum aperture. As you can see from the sample images, this lens is ideal for weddings, portraits, and low-light shots. Like most of the new Canon lenses, this 85mm works well with Eye Detection AF and facilitates fast autofocus.

Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro APO

  • Price: $449.00 (pre-order)
  • Feature Overview:
    • Available Mounts: Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony FE
    • Focal Length: 100mm
    • Aperture: f/2.8
    • Sensor Format: full frame

This is the second Laowa macro lens from Venus Optics. The 100mm f/2.8 is a 2:1 macro lens with comparable size to 1:1 lenses. For those of our readers concerned about background blur, this Laowa lens features a 13-blade rounded diaphragm that helps create the beautiful, creamy bokeh that we’re all searching for.

It’s important to note that this Laowa lens isn’t exclusively for macro photography; its infinity focus also makes it a solid choice as a telephoto portrait lens.

5 NYC Photography Events To Visit During Photography Month

5 NYC Photography Events To Visit During Photography Month

Photography has a rich, extensive history dating back to the musings of Han Chinese philosopher Mozi in 391 BC (it’s nice to finally have someone we can blame for selfies). Since then, we’ve seen daguerreotypes, calotypes, dry plates, film and now digital. To celebrate this wild journey, the global community is celebrating May 2019 as Photography Month. In honor of this, our new favorite holiday, we put together a list of the 5 best NYC photography events to visit this May.

1. Art of the Mountain: Through the Chinese Photographer’s Lens

This exhibit is a cultural deep dive into the legend and legacy of the mountains scattered across China’s landscape. The exhibit has three sections that guide viewers through the numerous ways these fixtures of the landscape shaped and continue to shape Chinese art, history, and culture.

The show runs through August 18, 2019, and is located at the China Institute Gallery in lower Manhattan.

2. Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die: Punk Graphics

Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die attempts to do something that many have tried and failed: capture an authentic look into the punk lifestyle. The exhibition features photographs, zines, flyers, videos, and other artwork from 1976-1986 when punk zealotry was at its peak. The visuals on display explore not only the Punk world but also how its influence extended into every facet of pop culture and advertising.

The show runs through August 18, 2019, and is located at the Museum of Arts and Design in Columbus Circle.

3. In The Dugout with Jackie Robinson

This photo series highlights one of the most talented and well-known players of America’s favorite pastime: Jackie Robinson. In 1947, Robinson broke a major social barrier and became the first black player to be drafted into Major League Baseball. This never before seen collection of 30 photos gives us a glimpse into the media’s portrayal of one of the greatest baseball players of all time.

This show runs through September 15th, 2019, and is located at the Museum of the City of New York in the Upper East Side.

4. Your Mirror: Portraits from the ICP Collection

We can’t think of a better place to celebrate Photography Month than the International Center of Photography. One of their current installments, Your Mirror, explores the personas that photographers and subjects alike create for the camera. This promising collection of work features (among other things) a daguerreotype of a bedridden woman by Southworth & Hawes, a carte de visite of Sojourner Truth holding her knitting, Samuel Fosso’s performative self-portraits, as well as an FBI wanted poster.

This exhibition will be up until June 16th, 2019, at the International Center of Photography in SOHO.

5. The Extended Moment: Photographs from the National Gallery of Canada

This installment features 175 photos that portray almost 180 years of photography. The Extended Moment examines this medium as a living, breathing entity. To illustrate this idea, the images are arranged to illustrate photography’s incredible evolution as well as connect the medium’s common themes through time.

This exhibition will be up until May 26th, 2019, at the International Center of Photography in SOHO.
